The Plaza Closes After January 19, 2027 for at Least Four Years of Facade Work
The Plaza Hotel at 768 Fifth Avenue will close temporarily after January 19, 2027, for exterior repairs and a restoration of its historic facade. The hotel's operator, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, announced the closure on October 14, 2026, and said the work will last at least four years.
January 19, 2027 is the hotel's last day of service. Work begins the following day, January 20.

The building and the work
The Plaza opened on October 1, 1907, on Fifth Avenue at Central Park South, across from the southeast corner of Central Park. It was designed by the architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, and the building is a New York City landmark.
Fairmont said the scope and complexity of the facade work require detailed planning, coordination with relevant stakeholders and compliance with historic preservation requirements. It said the work would significantly disrupt hotel operations.

What has not been announced
Fairmont has not said in detail what the restoration will include, what it will cost, or when the hotel will reopen. It said other aspects of how the work will be carried out remain under review.
The building also contains private condominium residences. No statement has been made about what the closure means for the building's residents.

Until January 19
The hotel remains in service through January 19, 2027. Its public rooms include the Palm Court, under its stained glass ceiling, the Terrace Room, with its arched colonnade and painted ceiling, and the Grand Ballroom.
