Oberon

New Museum

Lower East SideArt museum

The New Museum waited nearly 50 years for a proper restaurant, and it turned out to be worth it. Oberon opened on July 7, 2026 inside the museum's newly expanded OMA-designed building on the Bowery, becoming the institution's first-ever full-service restaurant. Named after the fairy king in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the 90-seat space pairs sculptural cork and weathered-wood interiors with custom furniture by Minjae Kim and an interactive AI bar installation by artist Ian Cheng that learns regulars, hands out nicknames, and even plays chess with guests. Led by chefs Julia Sherman and Ali Ghriskey, the vegetable-forward, Hudson Valley-sourced menu makes this less a museum cafe and more a downtown dining destination in its own right.

Le Pavillon

Midtown EastFrench restaurant4.6 (857)

The restaurant credited with reviving Midtown dining after the pandemic just hit a major milestone. Le Pavillon, Daniel Boulud's Michelin-starred showpiece inside One Vanderbilt, recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, marking five years since it opened in May 2021 directly across from Grand Central Terminal. Designed by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld with 57-foot ceilings, a winding garden path, and uninterrupted views of the Chrysler Building, the 11,000-square-foot space remains one of the most architecturally striking restaurants in the city. Five years in, Chef Boulud's vegetable- and seafood-forward French menu continues to define what world-class dining in New York can look like.

Marcel

Lenox HillRestaurant5.0 (6)

Marcel just opened inside Sotheby's new global headquarters at the landmarked Breuer Building on Madison Avenue, pairing the design team behind SoHo's beloved La Mercerie with chef-partner Marie-Aude Rose for a French-leaning continental restaurant that is already one of the most talked-about openings of the year. Named for Marcel Breuer, the architect of the building, the restaurant is a warm, walnut-paneled contrast to the Brutalist exterior above, with mohair banquettes, candlelight, custom bronze lighting, and an open kitchen producing elevated takes on classics. Paintings, sculptures, and rare jewelry from Sotheby's collection line the space, making every dinner feel less like a meal and more like an evening inside one of the world's great private art collections.

550 Madison

Midtown EastCommercial real estate agency4.7 (91)

550 Madison Avenue, the 1984 postmodern tower by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, has reopened its lower floors as a multi-level dining destination from Simon Kim's Gracious Hospitality Management, designed by Rockwell Group. Bar Chimera, on the ground floor, is conceived as an extension of the building's public plaza, organising three distinct bar environments dedicated to martinis, wine, and whiskey, paired with a brasserie-style food menu and anchored around a live pine tree and a water basin. Cote 550, a subterranean outpost of Kim's Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse, occupies the level below. A mezzanine omakase counter from three-Michelin-star chef Masahiro Yoshitake, Sushi Yoshitake, is scheduled to follow later this fall. Rockwell Group's interiors lean on the landmark's existing palette and geometry rather than replacing them.

Clemente Bar

NoMadCocktail bar4.7 (149)

Clemente Bar, discreetly perched above the legendary Eleven Madison Park, enchants with its moody wood-paneled space adorned by sweeping murals from Francesco Clemente, setting the tone for a sophisticated yet warmly approachable evening. The atmosphere is a study in modern-Michelin elegance—velvet banquettes, rich dark woods, and low lighting create an inviting cocoon, where conversation and creativity flourish. Here, the boundary-pushing ethos of EMP translates into a cocktail program that delights with both classic finesse and unexpected, plant-based innovation—think a Negroni-Piña Colada hybrid topped with a frozen Campari disc, or a whiskey-pandan concoction reminiscent of a Girl Scout Cookie. Elevated vegan bites complete the experience, making Clemente Bar a destination for both design aficionados and culinary explorers seeking one of Manhattan’s most distinctive new drinking dens.
