1 Hotel Central Park
The address was a hotel first, the Park Chambers, built in 1923 to a Rouse & Goldstone design and gutted in 1965 for offices, which is what it stayed for the next fifty years. Gene Kaufman Architect turned the eighteen floors back into rooms in 2015, and AvroKO, working alongside the brand's in house designers, left the riveted steel beams and concrete ceilings bare. Thirty six thousand potted ivy plants climb three stories of the front.
Wood pulled from retired New York water tanks runs through the bedrooms, where the mattresses are a hemp blend and the showers sit behind paned glass like small greenhouses. A window seat in some rooms pushes out over the street, and a few of those look into Central Park. The papers arrive on a tablet and the notepad by the bed is a blackboard.
Every tap runs through a filter, and the water reaches the room in carafes made from recycled wine bottles. A farm stand in the lobby gives away fruit, and the fitness room is floored in a salvaged gym court. The house car is an electric Audi, the concierge arranges a Central Park Conservancy guide for anyone who wants the park explained, and dogs are met with beds and bowls the house keeps in stock. The gate is one block north.
