One of Los Angeles' most iconic cultural landmarks is about to undergo its biggest transformation in nearly three decades. The Getty Center, the Richard Meier-designed hilltop museum that has welcomed over 1.4 million visitors a year since 1997, will close on March 15, 2027 for an $600 to $800 million campus-wide modernization, with plans to reopen in spring 2028 ahead of the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. The overhaul brings in a powerhouse design team, with Gehry Partners reimagining the arrival sequence and lower tram, WHY Architecture overhauling the Welcome Hall with a new café and bookstore, and OLIN expanding the landscape design across the campus. A newly designed tram by Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr will replace the original 1997 system, marking what the Getty calls the most significant series of upgrades in the museum's history.
