Hispanic Society Museum & Library

Washington Heights

Photography by The Hispanic Society Museum & Library

Designed by Charles Pratt Huntington and envisioned by philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington, the Hispanic Society’s campus is a masterclass in early 20th-century grandeur, with its monumental Beaux Arts architecture and sweeping terraces creating an atmosphere of timeless elegance and scholarly serenity. Inside, the museum’s galleries dazzle with one of the world’s finest collections of Spanish art outside Spain—think masterpieces by El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, and Sorolla—while the library’s rare books and manuscripts invite quiet contemplation amid soaring, light-filled spaces. The surrounding Audubon Terrace, adorned with Anna Hyatt Huntington’s dramatic bronze and limestone sculptures, transforms the visit into a multisensory experience, blending art, architecture, and the spirit of discovery in a setting that feels both intimate and awe-inspiring. Recent renovations have thoughtfully preserved the institution’s historic character while introducing state-of-the-art conservation labs and enhanced visitor amenities, ensuring that this cultural treasure remains as vibrant and relevant as ever.
