The Ludlow Hotel
Sean MacPherson opened the place in 2014 with Ira Drukier and Richard Born, on a Ludlow Street building its first developers had walked away from after the crash. MacPherson wanted the ground floor to work as a living room for the neighborhood, and glass walls carry the view from the front door straight through to a bluestone courtyard at the back. Antique chandeliers hang over a distressed limestone fireplace in the lounge.
The Mini runs 195 square feet and is sold to a single guest. Loft Queens put a soaking tub in a windowed bathroom, separate from the rain shower, and the Skybox Loft adds a balcony and a sitting area facing 180 degrees of Manhattan. Terraces attach to two categories, a Studio Queen on the seventh floor and a Loft King on the fifteenth. The two largest of the lofts sit on floors three to six.
The penthouse takes the seventeenth: 1,500 square feet with a full kitchen and a table for six, opening onto a thousand square feet of furnished terrace that faces the Brooklyn Bridge. Two nights minimum, and no private gatherings up there.
Down at street level Dirty French has held the restaurant since the hotel opened, and two bars run cocktails from Major Food Group's Thomas Waugh. Less a hotel than a borrowed apartment.
