United Palace
Occupying an entire Manhattan block in Washington Heights, United Palace is a historic 1930 movie palace and vaudeville theatre designed by Thomas W. Lamb with interiors by Harold Rambusch and once counted among Loew’s famed “Wonder Theatres.” Originally a deluxe movie house, it survived a threat of demolition in 1969 and was rescued and restored by the community, emerging as a thriving cultural venue with more than 3,000 seats that still evokes the grandeur of cinema’s golden age. The theatre today hosts a vibrant series of films and special screenings that celebrate storytelling on the big screen, including a popular Movies at the Palace program featuring free movies and post-film conversations presented by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Many of Miranda’s curated screenings honor community and the arts with tickets available at no cost through advance reservation.
